The festival, organized by Sakyapa sect monks, highlights Nepal's rich cultural heritage and environmental connections, as well as spiritual fervor and cultural resilience.

Day 04: By Domestic Plane: Pokhara to Jomsom. Trek to Kagbeni (2800m, 3h).

After breakfast in Pokhara, take an early domestic mountain flight to Jomsom (2,720 m), as flights operate only between 6:30 AM and 10:00 AM to avoid the fierce afternoon winds; sit on the left side for stunning views of the Annapurna range or the right side for Dhaulagiri, flying through the dramatic Kali Gandaki Gorge with 8,000 m peaks towering on both sides, and upon landing, enjoy the thinner, cooler air while having breakfast and preparing for the wind. Around two-thirds of the way, pass through the small settlement of Eklai Bhatti (lonely teahouse) for a brief tea break before reaching Kagbeni. At midday, set out on an easy, mostly flat three-hour trek to Kagbeni along the wide, stony bed of the Kali Gandaki River. The infamous Jomsom Wind usually kicks in around 11:00 AM, so sunglasses and a buff or scarf are essential. In the afternoon, explore Kagbeni (2,800 m), a medieval Tibetan village and official gateway to Upper Mustang, visiting the 15th-century Kag Chode Thupten Samphel Ling monastery with vibrant murals and a peaceful courtyard, wandering its narrow mud-brick alleyways while spotting the “Kheni” guardian statues, and finally walking down to the confluence of the Jhong and Kali Gandaki Rivers, a sacred site where pilgrims search for Shaligrams, the ancient ammonite fossils.

Note: If the flight is canceled due to inclement weather, we will drive to Kagbeni by road. Landslides or overflowing torrents occasionally cut through this road route, particularly during the summer months (August and September). It is sometimes necessary to adapt to the surroundings and walk for a few minutes to reach another vehicle on the other side of the disaster. These rare imponderables are likely to lengthen travel times. When this happens, we encourage you to keep your sense of adventure and good humor.

We marvel at the statues and frescoes before embarking on a long descent through the villages of Lo Gekar (home to an eleventh-century monastery) and Marang, finally arriving at Tsarang amidst fields of mustard, barley, or buckwheat. Starting from the traditional village of Yara, the trail follows a gentle path across arid terrain, ancient fields, and dramatic cliffs shaped by wind and time, gradually leading to Lori Gompa, a sacred Buddhist monastery dramatically built into a rocky cliff. This centuries-old gompa is an important spiritual site for the local community, offering a peaceful atmosphere, prayer rooms, and beautiful views of the surrounding Mustang valley. The walk is easy to moderate and can be completed within a few hours, making it ideal as a day excursion, while along the way hikers can observe local life, chortens, mani walls, and the unique Tibetan-influenced culture of the region. After a short descent to Pa Ha, we pause for lunch. The terrain then slows us down with ridges, followed by a steeper but shorter descent that leads us to the villages of Chusang, where the houses tower high like fortresses.

After reaching the top, we descended toward the village of Muktinath, where we witnessed the convergence of Hindu and Buddhist shrines. The pagoda temple of Vishnu and a sacred spring with a natural gas flame were particularly awe-inspiring. The breathtaking views of Dhaulagiri (8,167 m, the 7th highest summit in the world), Nilgiri (7,061 m), and Tilicho Peak (7,134 m) added to the charm of the place.
